It was around 6:15pm that I arrived in Sully, IA, a very nice small town in the SE part of the state. CP's schedule said they were going to be performing at First Reformed Church, but when I got there the parking lot was empty. After driving around for 5 minutes (I must have looked really confused to the locals) I finally found CP's Food For The Hungry Beat 33 bus...parked at a Reformed church just north of where I had been. The bus was there, but no one was in the church and it was very dark inside. After looking around, I noticed the community school across the street was pretty well-lit for that time of the day, so I went to check it out.
Pretty church, eh? This was taken from the parking lot of the school. I made my way into the school, and as I looked to the left...
...this poster was hung on the window of the school's office. Guess this was the right place!
It was a good thing the 180 Tour didn't end up at the church; there wouldn't have been any room! About 300 youth, parents, and even grandparents showed up for the event. This is what the stage looked like before the show started. No, there wasn't a fire---just fog machines.
Special guests Bread of Stone opened the evening. This picture was taken just to the right of the sound board, which you can see a little of. Great lighting rig and excellent sound; definitely appealed to the techie in me. The techie in me forgot to take a picture of the full sound board, though...
I moved up to take these pictures of Bread of Stone after the wave...the wave of young people, that is, that ran to the stage from the folding chairs and bleachers after BOS' lead singer invited them up. Excellent band.
Unfortunately, I have no pictures of Crystal speaking after Bread of Stone's set. The "wave" receded back to the chairs and bleachers to listen to her talk, and I would have been a bit conspicuous standing up front all by myself taking pictures! That plus I hadn't heard Crystal speak before and I didn't want to miss anything while fiddling with my camera. Excellent talk; it gives you confidence that there is hope after tragedy and that God is in control.
CP sets up their gear after Crystal's talk. There were equipment boxes circled around the stands that held up the speakers to the sound system, so I had myself a comfy vantage point close to the front of the stage.
And the show begins...
Songs played were (not necessarily in this order; my powers of recollection are failing!) Love's Done Something, Weighted, Wastin' Time (Bryan did the third verse twice because, well, he wanted to! lol...), CP version of "Footloose" (it was scary how much of the lyrics I remembered...), Whole World in His Hands, Close Your Eyes, Alright, You Alone (followed by a really nice version of "Agnes Dei." For those not familiar, it was originally released by Michael W. Smith and then rocked out a few years ago by Third Day. CP definitely had the chorus of the song rockin'.), and Revolution. Bryan also spoke during the concert about helping the poor around us and about being a sponsor of Beat 33, which is striving to help battle the AIDS epidemic in Africa.
Switching sides. I stayed here the rest of the concert, taking pictures, singing, and even throwing up my rawkfist occasionally. Oh, wait; different band. *smile*
The zoom on my camera works pretty well though, as I discovered.
Yes, Scott is in the picture...somewhere...
Case proving the law that objects in motion tend to stay in motion. He was hard to get a picture of!
If you get your magnifying glass out and squint real hard, you can juuuuuuust see Scott back there on the drums. Do bands have something against drummers that they stick them in the back? *lol*
Photography timing lesson: watch how fast the lights are rotating around. If you don't, you may end up with a bass player with a glowing head.
Pretty red lights...
People in Sully getting their praise on.
Pretty blue and yellow lights....
Back to pretty red lights. (Apparently I had an obsession with taking pictures of every lighting color scheme...)
No flash. Much better. Darker, but much better.
Photography lesson #2: taking digital pictures using your flash doesn't work well. The fog from the machines reflects the light back!
One more Case close-up.
Case and Bryan with blue and red beams coming out of their heads. (recall Photography Lesson #1...)
Encore time. CP played their signature encore song, "Take On Me." Rockin'. No infamous CP dance contest during their set, since they had already done one earlier in the day during the school's convocation.
See Case on one side of the light...
...and now on the other side of the light!
Having forgotten Photography Lesson #2, I took this after the concert when everyone was congregating for merch and autographs.
Ah, that's better. Welcome to a better view of the Lynnville-Sully Hawks and Hawkettes gym!
And one of the cool things you can get from the CP merch table is....
This! I've wanted a CP hoodie ever since I heard they were including them in their merchandise, and now one is finally mine! It's very warm, too, so I think I'll take it off now. Oh, and I have to be a bit careful; Scott told me the zipper likes to stick once in a while. So far so good...
Last, but certainly not the least, is my cat Fritz. (My kids think it's their cat but they're sadly mistaken. *lol*) What does Fritz have to do with all of this? He was patiently waiting for me and met me at the door when I got home. He's a good guy...for a cat, that is.
That's all, folks! If you've enjoyed the pictures, please stop by my guestbook and drop me a line! The link can be found in the bright yellow box on my homepage.
